Addicted to power
In june 1997 this was a headline in a national newspaper. What did change since then? Last month we had more than average power failures in the Netherlands with a lot of impact for organizations and the households in specific areas.
Power failure affects almost 30,000 households in Amsterdam: wounded after explosion and museums evacuated
Due to excavation work in the Daniël Stalpertstraat in Amsterdam-Zuid, a power failure occurred in a large part of the city center this morning. A power cable was hit, causing several short circuits. According to grid manager Liander, more than 28,000 households are without electricity. It is not yet clear how long the failure will take.
At café Mulder on the Weteringschans, an explosion occurred around 11 am due to the short circuit. A man was wounded. At that moment he was working at the café and was transported to the hospital with burns.
Public Transport
Public transport is partly silent. Around 11.30 about half of the tram lines drove back the normal route, the Amsterdam public transport company GVB reported. Only the lines that cross the affected area in the De Pijp district are not yet running because there is no power on the overhead line. The subway continued to operate during the power outage. Traffic lights in the region do not work. People were locked up in elevators
Museums
Due to the disturbance all 1,500 visitors to the Rijksmuseum had to leave the building. According to a visitor, the lights went out and the Safety & Health organization got visitors out of the museum. The organization confirms that. This went quietly, according to the woman in the praise. "There is no panic." According to her, the artworks have not been in danger, because an emergency generator guarantees security. The museum does not expect to be able to open yet for the time being. Who still has his ticket may come back later.
The Allard Pierson Museum is also affected by the power outage. The museum says it stays closed all day. Also the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam, next to the Allard Pierson, can not be seen all day. The museum is located on the Oude Turfmarkt in the center of Amsterdam, near the Rokin. At least until 1.30 pm it is not possible to go to the Pathé de Munt, Pathé City and Pathé Tuschinski cinema.
Nursery
A day nursery is also vacated, the children are taken care of at the PvdA campaign office. "A baby bed is placed at the office and the children are making drawings themselves", an employee from the campaign team reports. According to her, fire broke out in the day nursery and the supervisors immediately proceeded to evacuate. The children are doing well. The police have, as usual in case of major power failures, sent additional agents to the streets.A day nursery is also vacated, the children are taken care of at the PvdA campaign office. Second Power failure
After the major power outage in the center and the south of the city, Amsterdam West is now also hit by a power outage. According to grid manager Liander, it seems that both power failures have nothing to do with each other. Liander speaks of 'spontaneous failure'. (Murphy was there?)
